Traffic Accidents
Oman has a relatively high rate of road accidents, and the figures of death and injury on the roads increases every year. The government has started a big road safety campaign to educate drivers about safe driving standards and how to reduce accidents. The name of the campaign is ‘Salim and Salimah, Safe and Sound’ (www.salimandsalimah.org), and their website contains a great deal of excellent information on accidents and road safety.
If you have an accident, don’t move your car until the police arrive, even if you are causing a major road blockage. The police will usually arrive pretty quickly. In case of an accident, call 24 560 099 (don’t call 999, it is reserved for the Fire Department and emergency cases only). Expect a crowd of rubberneckers to gather around the accident – at least you’ll have someone there who can translate from Arabic to English when the police arrive. The police will decide (on the spot) which party is responsible for the accident, and then all involved parties should go to the nearest police station. If your car can’t be driven, the police will arrange for it to be towed away. When you get to the police station you might have to wait around for quite some time, so be patient.
